Is There Anybody Out There? (Part 1)
By Johan Johansson
The idea
When I was asked to write something about model-flying in England, I didn’t realise what a challenge I was up against! After much pondering upon the subject, I decided that it would have to be a mix of facts and personal impressions, accumulated during my 7 years of living there. As I am Swedish originally and started flying model-airplanes there in my youth (I am still young though!!!), I thought it might be interesting to include some of my experiences from there as well, which could be compared both to London and to the impressions I have had about flying here in Latvia. Deciding on this I realised it would have to be divided into different parts, hence it has taken the form of a series of short articles that will be posted at different intervals, so please check back for more!

Hi, My interest would be mainly on what would be wothwhile for us all to borrow from better organized communities. We are not formally a clube here, still I believe there is number of rules/soft rules/practices to borrow and to try to adopt here in Riga. I think this forum is a right place to publish such rules or behaviour guidelines. Myself, being a beginner, have been several times in situations I didn't like myself and could have avoided.. Big and small: - general safety rules - can I fly when others are in the air - or should I ask their permission? (even if freqincy is checked) - what is the place for pilots standing during flights - especially when several people do fly. For me, learning landings, it is important: we've had cases with unsure landing between pilots standing at both sides of the line - someone could have warned me that pointing exhaust at a car is WRONG )) - many other things re. being at the airfield, especially useful for newcomers. I think if we, as a RC community will study the best practice and try to emplement some of it - it will contribute to club spirit, joy, planes and people's (children included) safety.

Hello again,
Thanks for the suggestions Anatolijs! Really good stuff there and I was planning to include a lot of the stuff you said, but it was really nice to hear some concrete examples from someone from around here. If you think of anything else please let me know!
Also, if anyone else has anything they would like to read about please let me know. In English, Latvian or Russian doesn't matter, I could get it translated! In my opinion the ideal way this writing could take is that whatever is mentioned in the articles could be the start of a discussion to make Model-flying more interesting, safer and just...More!...here in Latvia.
What do all you modelers think out there?!
Johan
